MEDINA - Medina County Safe Communities announced today the 2009 Fatal Crash statistics for Medina County. There were a total of 13 crashes with 15 persons killed in 2009. Of the 15 persons killed, 5 were not wearing seat belts. Alcohol was a factor in five of the crashes, and drivers under the age of 24 accounted for three. Although the numbers from 2009 are not ideal, our county has done a good job of reducing fatal crashes over the past year. In 2008, our county totaled 18 crashes with 21 persons killed.

“The reductions from 2008 to 2009 can be attributed to the Medina Safe Communities coalition membership. Each member of the coalition – with education, enforcement and information – has done a very good job for our county” said Lt. Brian Ohlin of the Brunswick Police Department, Commander of the Medina County OVI Task Force.

27.8% fewer fatal crashes

28.5 % fewer fatalities

50% fewer crashes involving drivers under the age of 24

Studies show that seat belt usage in Medina County is holding at a high of 80%. “The key effort of each seat belt usage campaign is to keep awareness high among all drivers and prevent fatal crashes in Medina County, as of today we continue to reach for that goal,” said Lt. Josh Swindell of the Medina Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol
