The Brunswick City Division of Police and our law enforcement coalition partners are aggressively enforcing the OVI laws in Medina County as part of our ongoing efforts to reduce fatalities. Studies of seat belt usage in Medina show that 80 % to 83.7% of people who live in Medina County are making the right decision and buckling up, but we can do better. Awareness, education and enforcement are the key components of our strategy.

2011 County Traffic Fatalities Update
As of July 7, 2011 there has been EIGHT Fatal Crashes with TEN persons killed in Medina County for 2011. The County total for all Fatal Crashes in 2010 was EIGHTEEN with TWENTY persons killed. The County total for all fatal crashes in 2009 was FIFTEEN persons killed. This compares with TWENTYONE traffic deaths for the same period in 2008.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, each fatality has a comprehensive cost of $3,366,388. associated with it. The fatality cost in Medina County for all of 2011 is now equal to $26,931,104.00
“The citizens of Medina County are making positive changes in driving behaviors. As of this date the Safe Communities Coalition members have reduced fatal crashes by 20% from this same time period from 2010,” said Chief Carl DeForest of the Brunswick Division of Police.
“The Ohio State Patrol would like to remind drivers to keep their eyes and focus on the roadway at all times. Too many drivers are distracted and creating dangerous situations on our roadways by talking on their phones, texting, driving below the posted speed limit, and stopping at green lights. We can work together to significantly reduce fatal and injury crashes by impacting the epidemic of distracted driving and Contribute to a safer Ohio” said Lieutenant William Haymaker of the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Medina Post.
“Studies of Seat Belt usage, in Medina County have fluctuated over the past two years from a high of approximately 88% to a low of 73%, people who live in Medina County need to make the right decision and use seat belts. Awareness and Enforcement are the key components” said Lieutenant Brian Ohlin of the Brunswick Division of Police.
